Top Ten Tuesday: Worlds I'd Never Want to Live In

This week's topic is: Worlds I'd Never Want to Live in.


Here are my top ten:

1) Panem from The Hunger Games. I would really not enjoy living in a society where children have to face a 'reaping' to be chosen to fight other children to the death every year. True, I'd be too old to be in the reaping myself, but my little sister would be, and I wouldn't be even allowed to volunteer in her place! Plus, I'd either be living in poverty and starvation in one of the districts or in the horribly fake and superficial Capital. No thanks.

2) George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four. In some ways this is only an exaggeration of our current society. But I would hate to live under such an oppressive government that used mind control and brain-washing, where any individual ideas were classed as 'thoughtcrime' and where rebellion was virtually impossible.

3) The Republic of Gilead in Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale. This is probably every woman's nightmare-a world in which you only exist to reproduce, yet your children are taken from you. As a woman, you can't leave the house except to go to markets and you're not allowed to read or make your own living. You're only valued if you're capable of bearing children. It's a very sinister world that I definitely wouldn't want to live in.

4) Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. A world in which all books are forbidden and any found are burnt to cinders (along with their owners) is my idea of a nightmare!

5) Wither by Lauren DeStefano. In this dystopian future, women only live to be twenty years old (so I would already be long dead). Crime and poverty are rife and young girls get kidnapped and sold to become brides and baby-making machines. Truly horrible.

6) The world of Arras in Crewel by Gennifer Albin. Unless I managed to be picked by the Guild to be a Spinster, I'd have to be a secretary, and have the details of my life controlled by others. I'd have no free-will at all-my future already mapped out for me. If I was a Spinster my life would probably be even worse-I'd have to remain celibate and trapped within the Guild's web of control.

7) Delirium by Lauren Oliver. I would hate to live in a world where love was treated as a disease. But then again, I suppose I wouldn't no any different. I'd probably be brainwashed like the others, eagerly awaiting my procedure.

8) Eretz in Days of Blood and Starlight by Laini Taylor. Don't get me wrong-I think chimera and seraphim are both awesome, but I wouldn't want to be caught up in a war between them!

9) A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin. Well, the idea of dragons is pretty cool and it could be fun being a knight, king or sellsword. But unfortunately as a woman my lot would be pretty poor. I'd either be forced to marry at about 12 years old to a man more than twice my age or have to work in a brothel to earn my keep. Also, most people seem to be brutally murdered in this series sooner or later, so my chances of survival into old age are pretty slim.

10) Divergent by Veronica Roth. I don't think I'd enjoy living in a society that was divided into factions, especially if I had to separate from my family and friends. But I could probably live with it more easily than the other worlds. I think I'd just join Amity and chill out there for a while, hoping not to get involved in any kind of revolution!
