M is for Maroon #AtoZChallenge

Today I'm continuing with the A-Z Blogging Challenge. The aim is to write a post for every day of the month except for Sundays, with each post representing a different letter of the alphabet. This year I'm doing an A-Z of Colours. I'll be doing a variety of posts, including haikus and poems, arts and crafts, fashion and beauty, recipes and more!

For the letter 'M' I have chosen the colours Maroon. Maroon is a rich, deep reddish purple colour. It's named after the French word 'marron', meaning chestnut.

This Pinterest board features lots of maroon fashion ideas.

Keep reading to discover the symbolism behind this colour and enjoy some cool tunes :)

Symbolism

Maroon symbolises luxury and wealth. It can also represent spirituality-it's the colour of the robes worn by Vajrayana Buddhist monks like the Dalai Lama, for example. It can also be associated with smartness and formality-the distinctive maroon beret is used by airborne military all over the world and maroon is a common school uniform colour.

Complementary colour: green

Plants and flowers: scabiosa, batchelor's buttons, sweet williams, dianthis, arabian night dahlias, gladiolas, abutilon, orchids, roses

Animals: silver beaked tanager, maroon clown fish, maroon dragonfly

Foods: beetroot, red cabbage, wine, black cherries, red onions

I've got a few  Maroon-related things to share with you today. Firstly, there's this lame joke:

Did you hear about the red ship and the blue ship that collided? All the sailors were marooned!

Groan. Secondly, here are some of my Polyvore creations featuring maroon clothing and accessories:

Season of MistsPoppy

Lastly, I'm going to share some music from Maroon 5, which was one of my favourite bands growing up. They've made a bit of a comeback lately and their new stuff is okay, but I'm still nostalgic about their old tracks, which were part of the soundtrack to my teens!

Enjoy.

I like maroon - I'm not sure I've thought about putting green with it. I could see the video - it has a copyright thingy attached. I liked Maroon 5 too, but I was already grown up when they came onto the scene :-(
