My Review
Thank you to Xpresso Book tours who provided an e-book copy of Stolen Moon in exchange for an honest review.
Stolen Moon is the second book in the Light Chronicles series, but I hadn't read Shadow Fire before this one so I didn't know what to expect. Luckily the story was easy to follow and was a light and enjoyable read.
A royal knight named Katarina steals a powerful relic from a sorcerer called Zebulon who is raging war throughout the kingdom. She teams up with a band of mercenaries to return the moonstone medallion to its rightful place and destroy Zebulon. On their dangerous journey the group fight fierce magical battles and ravenous monsters together.
During the adventure there is a developing attraction between Katrina and Ethan, the mercenary leader. I don’t normally like books featuring romance, and at times this was a bit too saccharine for me-especially as they fell in love quite quickly and were always kissing and touching. But there was great chemistry between them and I'm sure younger readers would probably enjoy this type of romance, which captures the feelings of infatuation as well as being sweet and caring. Older, more cynical readers may find this type of romance a little unrealistic!
The characters are well-crafted and at times I could relate to Katarina as she has suffered through a lot and had to grow up quickly, but this has only made her stronger and more determined. She is very resilient character who never stops fighting for what’s right, even when she has to make difficult choices and sacrifices. But rather than being a stone-hearted super-human, she also has a vulnerability that makes her believable and is not afraid to let it all out with a good cry.
Loki, Caleb, Bronwyn and Vale were also entertaining characters. I have a bit of a thing for wolves, so there was one character in particular that really appealed to me! Ethan was okay, but I found him a bit beige at times. He is very smart, kind and protective of his friends and it was nice to see a male character expressing emotions freely. However, he’s a little too sweet and honourable for my taste (what can I say? I'm drawn to bad boys).
Despite the heavy romance element the plot moved at a reasonably swift pace and there was plenty of action to keep me interested (in between the sleeping and kissing scenes!) The magical battles and scenes where Katarina was learning to use her powers were particularly fun to read. I enjoyed Wheaton’s smooth writing style, which is neither too plain nor too verbose. There is quite a lot of description to explain characters back-stories and paint a detailed picture of the world but I enjoyed that. The world that Wheaton crafted is interesting and filled with fascinating mythological creatures such as monsters and shape-shifters. Zebulon is also a suitably sinister and creepy villain, although I did think that some of the challenges he posed were easily solved.
This book is appropriate for readers of around 13 years old and up as there is no profanity or adult material (except for some sexual tension) and only mild violence. I probably wouldn't recommend it to those who enjoy more action and gritty characters or to those who hate ‘insta-love’, but overall Stolen Moon is a good book for younger readers of the YA Fantasy genre who enjoy magic, adventure and romance.
Disclosure-I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
