About the Book

Chase was twelve the first time he arrived in a strange land where dark, ominous clouds never move, ancient trees violently spring to life during Darkness, and people seem to live without emotion. Doctors tell him they’re hallucinations, but he knows his visits are real. She’s there-Sash-and she’s more real than anyone he’s ever known.

His visits stop but, as years pass, the memories haunt Chase. Without warning, the young man suddenly finds himself again in a world called Krymzyn. Arriving during Darkness, he’s rescued from death by the extraordinary, beautiful but terrifying young woman he first met when he was twelve.

When Chase is thrust into the war of balance against vile creatures who threaten all who live there, Sash helps him understand his purpose in Krymzyn. A dark secret from the beginning of time reveals he might be able to stay there forever. To prove he belongs in Krymzyn and be with the only woman he can ever love, Chase will have to risk his own life in the ultimate battle.

Guest Post: BC Powell's Top Ten Fantasy/Sci-fi Books

My top ten fantasy books includes a bit of sci-fi, but they are all books that took my imagination places it had never been. They’ve also all had an influence on my own writing in one way or another.

10. The “Harry Potter” series by J.K. Rowling. When I look at it not as one novel, but as an entire body of work, the world and story J.K. Rowling created are mind boggling. Character comes first for me in a book, and hers show consistent growth as they face increasingly complex challenges. I end up developing true empathy with them.

9. “American Gods” by Neil Gaiman. I can’t imagine a top ten fantasy list without Gaiman on it. His writing is crisp, his stories original, and characters always compelling. This book is really the standard for modern urban fantasy. The blending of mythology with modern cultural obsessions is conceptually brilliant.

8. “Northern Lights” (a.k.a. The Golden Compass) by Phillip Pullman. When I read this book in my thirties, it made me feel like a twelve-year-old reader discovering fantasy for the first time. I love the complexity of the characters and found the story original and captivating. Parallel universe stories are always among my favorites.

7. “The Eye of the World” (The Wheel of Time Series) by Robert Jordan. I don’t read as much epic fantasy as I do other subgenres, preferring sci-fi-based fantasy much of the time. Jordan may be overlooked by younger readers of epic fantasy, but his stories, visual writing style, and characters are right there with Tolkien.

6. “A Wrinkle in Time” by Madeleine L’Engle. This was one of the first fantasy books written with a strong, young, female protagonist, and I would say it is the “godmother” of the modern YA fantasy genre. L’Engle’s prose is beautiful and flowing, her characters rich and complex, and some very deep issues are examined in this story. It was one of the first fantasy books I ever read, and it’s still one of my favorites.

5. “Brave New World” by Aldous Huxley. This book is much less fantasy than it is sci-fi, but it’s such an important work that I had to include it. “1984” and “Fahrenheit 451” really defined the dystopian genre. “The Hunger Games” and “Divergent” continue the themes. But BNW is the only dystopian novel I’ve ever read that forces the reader to ask, “Would this actually be bad?” and “Isn’t this something that may be possible soon?” I felt guilty for thinking those thoughts when I finished the book, which is an amazing place for an author to take a reader.

4. “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” by C.S. Lewis. This is the book that opened my mind to the world of fantasy as a young reader. It’s an amazing story with characters that keep you deeply involved throughout the course of the journey. I enjoyed the entire “Chronicles of Narnia”series, but the first book is a masterpiece.

3. “The Gunslinger” by Stephen King. The first time I read this book, I couldn't put it down. It was mysterious in a way that ignited my imagination and takes the reader into a dark, deeply compelling mood. Unfortunately, after the first three books, the “Dark Tower” series really fell apart. But the first book is one of the most enjoyable reading experiences of my life.

2. “Dune” by Frank Herbert. In my opinion, this is the best sci-fi/fantasy book ever written. I know that’s not going out on limb since so many others would agree, but this book opened my mind to the amazing “possibilities” of fantasy and sci-fi. If you enjoy fantasy and/or sci-fi but haven’t read this book, put it at #1 on your TBR.

1. “The Lord of the Rings” by J.R.R. Tolkien. Fantasy just doesn't get any better than this. I was seventeen the first time I picked it up. I didn't sleep or bathe and barely ate until I finished the books. After a nap, some pizza, and a shower, I disappeared into the books again.
