Today I'm joining in with the Cover Characteristic meme hosted by Sugar and Snark. Every week the author chooses a theme and you have to pick five of your favourite book covers featuring that object.
Today's cover characteristic is Ethnic Characters.
These are the ones that most appeal to me:
To be honest, I was shocked by how difficult it was to find a cover featuring a model that wasn't Caucasian! There are some amazing books written by African and Asian authors (The Color Purple, Life of Pi, Their Eyes Were Watching God and so on) but the covers normally depict abstract designs or nature images rather than models for some reason.
I'd like to read more books set in countries other than the US and the UK, featuring main characters from different cultural backgrounds (not just token characters). I think sci fi and dystopian (my favourite genres) are particularly lacking in diversity, but I'm happy to see that there are more fantasy novels based on African and Asian mythology emerging.
What do you think? Which is your favourite cover and why?
If you want to have a go just pop on over to the blog and sign up with the linky.
I really like your picks, especially the covers for Zoo City and Real World.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my CC. :)
Thanks, Petra. I love the cover for Zoo City too.
DeleteMemoirs of a Geisha almost made my list too! It's one of the best books I've read, and I love the actress of the movie too, she's gorgeous! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI agree, beautiful book and film!
