A-Z Challenge: U is for Uncertainty

Today I'm continuing with the A-Z Blogging Challenge. I'm doing an A-Z of human emotions, feelings and mental states and today is the letter U. U words are often hard to think of. They are usually the negative counterparts of other words and the word I have chosen-uncertainty is no different. It is literally the opposite of feeling certain. It can be a feeling of doubt, a lack of knowledge about future events or the feeling of being unsure about ourselves.Uncertainty is a part of all of our lives. We may experience it when wondering which career path to take, who to trust with a secret, whether we should move house, whether to risk everything on a new relationship, whether we are ready to get married or have children. Artists and writers may feel uncertain about whether the idea they have is a good one and whether people will like what they are writing.

Although it can be worrying, uncertainty is a natural and neccessary part of life. If we always knew the outcome of our decisions, life would be too easy. Instead of wondering about the limitless directions our lives could take we could see the path laid out for us and all we would have to do is follow it. But there would be no sense of freedom or adventure. Life would become predictable and boring and we would quickly lose interest. Our sense of achievement comes from making the right decisions without knowing what is ahead and taking risks that eventually pay off. How can we feel proud about doing something when we knew exactly how it would turn out? Without uncertainty there would be no suprise or curiosity and ultimately no sense of satisfaction in our lives.

So today I'm celebrating uncertainty. At twenty-one I'm only just starting out on my life's  journey. After the shake up of adolescence I'm left wondering exactly who I am now, what I want to do with this huge expanse of life laid our before me, and how I can make sure I get there. There are plenty of unanswered questions and I have no idea where I will be in ten years time. But it's going to be a hell of a lot of fun finding out.

Are you uncertain about what the future brings? Does it worry you or excite you?

  1. I find I have uncertainty when I start thinking about querying about my book. It's not the querying, but wondering how it will be received, what people will think, that sort of thing.

Good luck on the remainder of the A to Z Challenge!

  2. I worry way too much and sometimes it stops me from going forward and trying new things. I am trying though...just a few months ago I went rock climbing! Big step for me...I'm terrified of heights! Great post. Blessings, Joanne
