#atozchallenge X is for Xmas

Today I'm continuing with the A-Z Blogging Challenge! The aim is to write a post for every day of the month except for Sundays, with each post representing a different letter of the alphabet. This year, since I've just become a mum for the first time, my theme is: 'an A-Z of Newborn Care'. I'll be talking about all the highs and lows of parenting, sharing things that have been useful for me and posting some cute pictures.

For the letter 'X' I have chosen to talk about Xmas (Christmas) because I couldn't think of anything else vaguely baby-related apart from xylophones and what could I write about those? X is hard!

My little girl is a December baby, so as she gets older I'm going to have to work hard to make sure she has some memorable birthday celebrations that aren't overshadowed by Christmas. But I really want to make Christmas fun and exciting for her too, as it's my favourite time of year. Here are a few ideas I have for celebrating her first Christmas:

Ideas for Baby's First Christmas

  • Have a Christmas photo shoot (either hire a professional or get creative in your own home), perhaps with your little one dressed up as a reindeer or other Christmas character. You can then use the photos to make unique Christmas cards for close family members.
  • Buy or make an ornament for the tree saying 'Baby's First Christmas' as a keepsake.
  • Fill their stocking or sack with simple gifts such as cosy clothes, fun toys, books, perhaps some baby food 'treats' if they are on solid food.
  • Let them play with the wrapping paper (under supervision). They will love all the different colours, glitter, shiny patterns and crinkly textures.
  • Wrap them up warmly and let them see and feel snow on their face for the first time.
  • Introduce them to Christmas pop hits and carols. 'Silent Night' and 'Away in the Manger' are perfect lullabies.
  • If they are on solid food, sit them in a high chair round the table with the family so they feel part of the celebration. Let them wear a party hat and introduce them to new (unseasoned) foods such as turkey, brussel sprouts and cranberry sauce.
  • Take them to a Santa's grotto to meet Father Christmas for the first time. Be sure to bring your camera to capture the special moment (but don't be suprised if they cry).
  • Make your own new family tradition. It could be reading a book such as The Night Before Christmas on Christmas Eve, watching a favourite festive movie or going on an outing to choose a Christmas tree. Anything you like!
  • Let them 'help' with the Christmas baking by giving them a bowl and spoon to play with. Add some flour and water if you don't mind them getting messy.
