Today's topic: Place you wish we'd explored in the series but didn't?
Let me start by saying I think J K Rowling did an amazing job with the world-building in Harry Potter. Some of the locations the series explores are unforgettable and I could visualise them easily from her vivid descriptions-Hogwarts, Diagon Alley, The Burrow, The Ministry of Magic and Hogsmeade, for example.
The only places I wish we'd got a chance to see would be Durmstrang Institute and Beauxbatons Academy. Both are wizarding schools that visit Hogwarts during the Triwizard tournament. We learn quite a bit about the students, particularly Krum and Fleur, but it would be really interesting to see what the schools were like and how different they were from Hogwarts.
Hogwarts is such a warm, cosy feeling place but I think Durmstrang would be a lot darker and colder by contrast. It's likely located in a mountainous region like north Norway or Sweden as the students wear fur cloaks and hats. I imagine the building would look grey, strong and formidable. I don't think it would have such a welcoming atmosphere as Hogwarts-they don't even admit Muggle-borns and have a notorious reputation for their acceptance of the Dark Arts. However, since Karkaroff left maybe that changed.
I think Beauxbatons Academy, like it's students, would be very beautiful and ornate. It's located in the Pyrenees in southern France, so I picture a light and airy building with lots of decorative architecture and pretty gardens. Apparently they have wood nymphs to serenade students while they eat in the dining hall and at Christmas they decorate the hall with huge, glittering ice sculptures that never melt. It would be an interesting place to explore, as it was where Nicholas Flamel studied, so maybe some of his secrets would be hidden away somewhere.
I'd be interested to see whether they study different subjects at either of the schools and what the teachers are like. I wonder whether they have similar houses to Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw. Would they study different animals in Care of Magical Creatures? It's a shame that Harry and his friends didn't go on an exchange to either Durmstrang or Beauxbatons.
Which location would you like to see more of?
