JK Rowling's New Book Cover Reveal

I saw on Figment today that the cover for J.K Rowling's new book The Casual Vacancy has finally been revealed. The book will be 512 pages long and will be released on 27th September by Little, Brown and co.

Here's the cover and synopsis:

When Barry Fairbrother dies in his early forties, the town of Pagford is left in shock.

Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war.

Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils…Pagford is not what it first seems.

And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity, and unexpected revelations?

A big novel about a small town, The Casual Vacancy is J. K. Rowling’s first novel for adults. It is the work of a storyteller like no other.

I have to say I'm not overly impressed. It's a bit...well, plain. I know she's going for the adult market this time but I was expecting at least a picture or something. But I suppose it's all adds to the mystery and the publisher's don't want to give away too much. I'm not too thrilled with the synopsis either-it sounds like an episode of Midsommer Murders to me, but since it's J.K Rowling my curiosity means I won't be able to avoid reading it at some point. I hope the contents is more interesting than the cover.

What do you think? Do you like the simple style or were you expecting more? Are you looking forward to reading The Casual Vacancy or is it not your cup of tea?

  1. It is pretty boring. But they put her name right on the top to make sure people will know it's her book. I'm sure it'll sell a lot of copies at first just out of curiosity. Maybe people will even like it, but I suspect there are many many better writers in this genre, people who have done this many times longer than her. That's always what's annoying when a famous author dabbles in another genre. It is in some cases taking money out of the pockets of other authors.

  2. I feel much the same way. Certainly not impressed yet, but curious...

  3. I'm looking forward to it since I want to see if J.K. Rowling will continue to write as well as she did for the Harry Potter books. I can't say I really like this cover, but it's not bad.
