Review: Show & Tell in a Nutshell: Demonstrated Transitions from Telling to Showing by Jessica Bell

Show & Tell in a Nutshell: Demonstrated Transitions from Telling to Showing (Writing in a Nutshell Series, #1)Show & Tell in a Nutshell: Demonstrated Transitions from Telling to Showing by Jessica Bell
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

One of the most common pieces of advice given to aspiring writers is to ‘show, not tell’. But what exactly does this mean? The phrase is repeated throughout countless blogs, articles and writing handbooks, yet it is seldom explained in enough detail to be beneficial. For a long time, I had the vague notion that it encouraged writers to explain a character’s actions rather than to describe their thoughts and feelings, but I never fully understood how I could implement this as a technique in my writing. So when I heard about Show & Tell in a Nutshell: Demonstrated Transitions from Telling to Showing, I eagerly downloaded the eBook, hoping that it would help me to understand the concept once and for all.

Review: Wither by Lauren DeStefano

Wither

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

*SPOILER ALERT!*

I’ve had this book on my shelf since Christmas, and finally got around to reading it last week. I was intrigued by the premise as it sounded similar to Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, which I enjoyed reading at university.

*SPOILER ALERT!*

I’d read many good reviews about Divergent, and heard that it had been hailed as being on par with The Hunger Games. As a big fan of dystopian fiction, I decided to give it a go.

*SPOILER ALERT!*

I thoroughly enjoyed the first two books in The Hunger Games trilogy, and was eager to start on the final instalment. Catching Fire ended with the cliffhanger that there is now no district twelve and there were a lot of questions left unanswered.

*SPOILER ALERT!*

After thoroughly enjoying The Hunger Games I had high expectations for reading the sequel, Catching Fire. The Hunger Games ends with an unresolved love triangle and the hint of a looming revolution and I was curious to see how the next book would progress.

*SPOILER ALERT!*

There has been so much hype about The Hunger Games that I wanted to read it myself to see what all the fuss was about. I enjoy dystopian fiction so I was hoping that it would live up to the good reviews I have read.

I’d wanted to read Paranormalcy ever since I started to follow Kiersten White’s blog and fell in love with her witty writing style. The cover is also gorgeous and I am a big fan of the YA paranormal romance genre.
